Tutwiler Women Prison Series

Feminists Alien’s editor, Dr. Andrea Baldwin spent some time teaching at the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women, Alabama’s only maximum security prison which was listed at number seven among the United States’ worst prisons and described as a place “where guards impregnate inmates and federal consultants report an environment that’s “repressive and intimidating.”

In 2016, after four years of intense scrutiny, Governor Robert Bentley announced its impending closure under a transformation plan under which aging prisons will be consolidated and replaced by four, new facilities.
